It is a form of cultural expression. Hip Hop has given insight to the cultural experiences of African Americans in today’s media. Rhythm and Blues is similar. In recent years there has been a conversation between artists, audiences, and even executives about the content of today’s Hip Hop music. It is a conversation that needs to be had.

A weekly online magazine, Origin is the platform for this conversation. Audiences are intrigued by the stories of their favorite artists like Jay- Z, T.I., Common, Kanye West, and Mos Def, because with music these artists give us insight to their personal experiences. People need to know that our music is not simply about African American men who went from poverty to privilege, and now care only about bling and rims.

Our stories are just not that simple. Neither are our lyrics!

Origin gives insight to cultural issues like the single parent homes, and drug infested neighborhoods that motivate artists.

Articles and artist interviews will dare artist who are simply about the bling to show us how talented they truly are, and write songs about doing something admirable, without boring us! In addition, a song of the month is voted on by readers. A “line of the week” is to get audiences to actually listen word for word to how clever some artists are, and how words are used. Founder and Publisher Jamie Woodall, is a 2009 graduate of Temple University’s School of Communications and Theater.

Origin is also a platform for the conversation, about the role of women, in Hip Hop. Who’s to blame? Men? Women? Both! It’s tough enough for women to establish themselves as actors, and even tougher to obtain roles of significance, without Hip Hop videos that endorse stereotypes. Music featured in Origin is Hip Hop, and R&B with some Pop. Why Pop? It is now typical for artists of these genres to collaborate. Origin is like no other Hip Hop magazine, in that is mostly about issues that make the music.

The Origin reader is the culturally aware, fashion conscious, music adoring, and media savvy reader, who wants to be entertained, and stimulated by intellectual articles that give insight to all that is Hip Hop.

The Origin reader is versatile. The Origin man is into Adidas, but he knows how to wear a suit. An avid shopper, the Origin Woman likes stilettos and Marc Jacobs for a night out; she also knows Adidas are not just for boys. Being online gives Origin advertisers opportunity for an international audience. The post is about the media's use of Artists like Jay-Z to encourage audiences to vote, in the 2008 presidential election of Barack Obama. Artists themselves, also knew they were influential, so socially conscious music obviously affects us all. It motivates people to take action!
